We Provide Developmental Screenings

Learn more about developmental screenings and why they are necessary for all children.

Did you know that about one in six children in the US has one or more developmental disabilities or delays? This statistic has continued to rise over the past two decades, but the good news is that developmental screenings and regular checkups with our Newark, DE, pediatricians Dr. Kerry Kirifides and Dr. Bonni Field can ensure that any developmental delays are identified and addressed early on.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends both developmental and behavioral screenings for kids during their routine well-child checkups beginning at 9, 18 and 30 months. Children should be specifically screened for autism spectrum disorder at 18 and 24 months.

There are certain factors such as preterm birth or low birth weight that may increase the risk for developmental problems in children. Based on your child’s birth and medical history, our Newark, DE, practitioners may recommend additional developmental screenings.

Know the signs

There are certain milestones your child should be reaching as they continue to grow and age, and it’s particularly important for parents to track these milestones so that they can spot signs of possible developmental delays. These milestones will depend on the age of your child, and some milestones include,

  • Learning to crawl or walk
  • Mimicking sounds or gestures
  • Pointing at objects
  • Showing interest in play and toys
  • Offering one-word commands
  • Drinking from a cup

The CDC provides an extensive list of developmental milestones based on age. If you notice that your child hasn’t yet reached these milestones, then it may be a good idea to call our pediatricians to find out if they should be evaluated.

What are the different kinds of developmental disabilities and delays?

While there are many developmental disabilities, there are some that are more common than others. Some of the most common types of developmental disabilities that we see include,

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Blindness
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Down syndrome
  • Moderate-to-profound hearing loss
  • Learning disabilities
  • Seizure disorders
  • Tourette syndrome
